Vinegar for Ants
Natural home remedies for pest control sometimes are not as effective as commercial products. The concern over harsh chemicals used to kill ants and insects is a valid worry especially if kids and pets are around. These are the facts and myths of using vinegar for ants and ant control, which is a great repellant for ants in your home of these insects.
What is Vinegar?
Vinegar is a mild acid that is created by fermenting fruits to form a liquid consisting of about 5–20% acetic acid and water. Vinegar can be made from many fruits but more commonly apples and grapes.
Is Vinegar as An Ant Killer a Myth?
Using vinegar for ants does inhibit, slow down and even drown ants. What this natural mild acid is good at is wiping away the ant’s pheromone trail and acting as a repellent. A pheromone trail is the way ants communicate with another and they leave these scent trails to food sources. They smell with their antennae, and can determine direction and intensity of scents. In nature ants march in a line to the food and then back to the colony. The line that they march in is marked with this scent or the pheromone trail. Vinegar removes this communication between them therefore confuses the colony as to where the food source is located.
This natrual solution can be effective but is one of the more least effective ways to get rid of ants in the home. A better way to get rid of ants is with Borax, which is commonly found in commercial products. Borax is carried back to the nest and shared among the colony.
