The reason you have ants and the causes for ants in the house.
The reason you have ants in your home is because ants come into the houses looking for a food source. Ants thrive on foods such as sugar, meats and starches and will come searching for these if they are left out or not stored properly. They enter structures and homes through small cracks or areas not properly sealed to the outside. These are the causes for ants in the house.
What attracts ants in the house?
The main reason is sugar and starches. Anything sweet or starches since they are converted into glucose or sugar. They are also attracted to meats since they are an omnivorous insect and will eat most anything they can find.
To stop and prevent ants from coming into your home you need to do the following.
- Seal the outside of your doors, windows and any cracks to the outside. If there isn’t a place for them to come in then you’ve stopped them. To stop them from coming in your house you should properly seal the windows, doors and garage.
- All food needs to be stored properly. If there is food stored anywhere inside that isn’t in an air tight container they need to be put up. See our ant proof food storage recommendations. If you’ve taken a reason for ants to come in your home then you’ve stopped them.
- All pet food needs to be stored properly. Just with foods, all dog and cat foods need to be stored in air tight containers so ants and bugs can’t access or smell them. See our ant proof pet food storage recommendations.
- Trash where food is being thrown away needs to be stored properly or outside so that ants don’t come in looking for food scraps that have been thrown away. See our ant proof trash cans in our ant prevention products section of our shop.
To recap, the biggest causes for ants in the house are that there are food or sugary items exposed and there are openings in the seals to the house. If you take away where ants can come into your house you’ve stopped them. The second biggest point is if you take away the reason for them to come into your house you’ve prevented an infestation. Remember, seal around the windows, around the doors and any cracks that might be exposed to the outside. Always make sure that your food and pet food is properly stored.
